San Diego Carnivorous Plant Society 2024 Calendar

All 2024 general meetings will take place in Balboa Park Casa Del Prado Room 104, and the annual show and sale will take place in the adjacent Room 101. General meeting dates alternate Saturdays or Sundays, so be sure to check the schedule. Meetings are open to all, members and non-members, and there is no fee to attend.

Parking at Balboa Park can be difficult on weekends - please refer to the Balboa Park map for parking lots, public bus stops, and park Tram stops (our meeting room is denoted by the purple “9” on the map).

San Diego Carnivorous Plant Society meetings are a live forum to discuss all things carnivorous plants. There will always be a handful of plants for sale or trade at every meeting. All interest and experience levels welcome!

General meetings begin at 10:00 a.m. with socializing and a chance to check out plants for sale or trade. Meeting programs generally begin around 10:30, and are followed by more chances to socialize, ask questions and shop.

Memberships are a $20 donation per year to help cover the costs of the Balboa Park room use, community outreach and education events, and to support our Annual Sale & Show. Membership donations can be paid in-person at any meeting. Please bring a snack or beverage to share.

  • May 1, Carnivorous Plant Pop Up at Serpentine Cider (4pm-7pm)

    • Gage Hulsey will be traveling from Long Beach to sell his amazing seed grown Sarracenia, Drosera, Venus Fly Traps, and others. Come enjoy a socially-distanced evening at this open air venue! Attendance is free, plants and cider are buy-your-own. (@GageGrowForYou)

  • May 1, Southern California Carnivorous Plant Enthusiasts (SCCPE) Plant Sale at Rainforest Flora in Torrance (10am-12pm)

    • In-person meet and plant sale at a beautifully staged Bromeliad and Tillandsia nursery. Admission is free and please abide by local face covering and social distancing requirements.

  • May 15, Bay Area Carnivorous Plant Society (BACPS) virtual meeting (1pm)

    • Jerry Addington, world renowned Sarracenia breeder of Courting Frogs Nursery, will show his collection and breeding efforts. - Visit BACPS FB page for meeting link and more information.

  • May 22, SDCPS Virtual Meeting (10am-1pm)

    • Informal meeting where we invite YOU to show your collection! - Meeting link will be posted the week of.

  • May 29, SDCPS at North Park Community Park (Howard Ave and Idaho St) (11am-1pm)

    • Our regular meeting space in Balboa Park is still closed, but we’d like to see everyone again! Bring your plants for show, some might be available for sale, and your masks! Please be mindful of park rules, and wear your mask and practice social distancing. (Hand sanitizer will be available).

  • June 19-20, Southern California Carnivorous Plant Enthusiasts (SCCPE) SHOW & SALE! (10:30am-4pm)

    • Sherman Library and Gardens (Show & Sale free with Garden admission)

    • The SDCPS will unable to carry out our usual annual show and sale for 2021 at Balboa Park. We encourage everyone to instead support our SoCal sister society by attending this phenomenal not-to-miss event! PetFlyTrap will be judging the show, and an information talk is scheduled for each day. More details on the SCCPE website and FB page.

  • September 25 SDCPS Virtual Meeting (10am-Noon)

    • Build a bog with Gerry! Join us to learn how to build a basic outdoor bog. Providing a successful outdoor space for your carnivorous plants can be easy! (Did you also know that the SDCPS helped build the Balboa Park Botanical Building bog?!) Meeting link will be posted the day before.

  • November 20 at Sherman Library and Gardens (4pm-7pm)

    • Our sister group SCCPE (Southern California Carnivorous Plant Enthusiasts) will be hosting this year's annual potluck meeting at Sherman Library and Gardens. More information to come!

    • We'll be sharing member plant set ups, talking about propagation thru division and repotting (using generous plant donations from Jeff Greene), as well as the usual selling/trading (plants and seeds will be for sale -cash only, please). Prepare yourself to leave with plants!!

    • Guest Speaker Mike Aronesty from Southbay Traps! Mike will be presenting on one of his carnivorous plant trips AND selling plants from his store in Manhattan Beach!     • No meeting. The SDCPS will be participating in Fiesta Botanica - Celebrating Balboa Park's Plants & Gardens. Come visit us, and many other botanical societies, for this fun-filled day that includes a parade, lectures, demos and activities celebrating the rich horticultural history of Balboa Park.

    • Show & Sale Prep Meeting. Any member interested in assisting with the July Show & Sale is welcome to attend! We'll need assistance with space set-up, educational seminars, the plant hotel, display security, bog tours, and rotating shifts for the Club Sales Table. Show up to be assigned a volunteer role!

    • Spend some time at the second annual SDCPS Sale & Show.

    • Annual round-table potluck. Bring a dish, dessert, or drink to share. A special presentation from two members about their recent trip to the Meadowview Biological Research Station will also be featured. A limited amount of SDCPS logo shirts will be available for $20.

    • Natural History Museum Tour of the Botany and Entomology Departments with full access to the museum afterwards from 10am-2pm. Please meet at the Museum entrance (facing the fountain) at 9:45am to accommodate the curators waiting for us at 10am. We will have our regularly scheduled meeting in Casa Del Prado Room 104 from 2-5pm.

  • September 23-26 at at Del Mar Fairgrounds

    • The SDCPS will have a booth at the annual San Diego Fall Home/Garden Show. Society information and limited beginner plants will be available. Pleas visit website for tickets and event information.

  • November 12 at Balboa Park, Casa Del Prado RM 104 (2pm-5pm)
